PHOTOS: Mike Smith's new goalie mask features his kids
Mike Smith included a personal twist in his new goalie mask by including cartoon versions of his two children.
Still featured is Wile E. Coyote, as Smith has included on his Phoenix masks before, however Smith’s own children, Ajax and Angel, are also prominently featured riding on a rocket with the famous Warner Brothers cartoon character on his latest.
Here’s the full description from InGoalMag.com:
The Smith kids have joined Wile E. riding an ACME rocket, with one holding onto his ears, on the left side, and it catches up to and impales the road runner on the right side of the mask . The exhaust from the rocket trails back under the chin, which features a Route 41 highway sign for Smith’s No. 41, and over to the bottom of the right, with their names pillowing out in the smoke. One kid is wearing a “SmithPup” jersey.
Here's the other side.
Smith co-designs his masks with artist David Arrigo, who told InGoal that Smith took an even bigger role in the design work of this mask in particular.
A lot of goalies have included nods to their children on their masks, often placing their names or initials somewhere in the design, but never quite so prominently in the main graphic. That’s quite the tribute from an NHL goalie dad.
