Red Wings' Valtteri Filppula sprains MCL in Finland, out six to eight weeks
Should the NHL return to action in the next two months, the Red Wings could be without the services of forward Valtteri Filppula.

The forward was third on the Wings last season with 66 points (23-43-66) and has been spending his lockout free time like a lot of other players, by playing overseas. With that, though, comes the risk of injury and on Tuesday that's what happened to Filppula, who sprained his MCL with Jokerit in Finland.
The prognosis? He's going to be out six to eight weeks, via Ansar Khan of MLive.com.
As of now a start in early December isn't out of the question for the NHL season. If that's the case then Filppula would miss at least a month of it. Or the lockout could extend even further and it's possible Filppula won't miss any Red Wings games.
This is exactly why the NHLPA encouraged any player going overseas to get their contracts insured. If Filppula didn't get an insurance plan and the lockout is lifted before he is able to play then he could be punished by the team.
In 16 games with Jokerit, Filppula put up six goals and nine assists, playing for the same team he was a part of before coming to North America.
