Ryan Miller to start for USA vs. Slovenia, Jonathan Quick won't dress
Jonathan Quick will get a day off when the Americans play Slovenia on Sunday with Ryan Miller getting the start and Jimmy Howard backing up.
Jonathan Quick has earned himself a day off.
After leading the uSA to wins in the first two games including Saturday's thrilling victory over Russia, Quick will not dress on Sunday when the USA faces Slovenia to close out pool play. Ryan Miller will get the start and Jimmy Howard will suit up as the backup.
At this point it's evident that Quick is the Americans' No. 1 goalie but if you can prevent your goalie from playing three games in four days, especially early in a tournament, then it is ideal. Even with their win over Slovakia on Saturday, Slovenia shouldn't present a tremendous challenge for the USA.
That doesn't mention that it's not like the USA roster falls off a cliff with Miller in place of Quick for a day. It was a big question which of the two would be the No. 1 in the Olympics.
For the US the formula is pretty simple; win and they are into the quarterfinals with a bye, regulation or overtime.
