Sidney Crosby arrest report denied by Ottawa Police
Early Wednesday morning a report claimed that Sidney Crosby had been arrested in Ottawa. Local police denied the report. Also, it would be hard for Crosby to get arrested in Ottawa when he's training in Colorado.
Before the sun rose Wednesday morning, a shocking report came from QMI Agency that was published on the Ottawa Sun’s website. The report, which published at 3:24 a.m. ET claimed that Pittsburgh Penguins superstar captain Sidney Crosby had been arrested late Tuesday night in Ottawa. The firestorm that would have consumed your morning was called off, though.
When reached by the Canadian Press later Wednesday morning, Ottawa Police said “it never happened.” Further, Ottawa police chief Charles Bordeleau tweeted this:
We have had no dealings with Mr. Crosby. @ottawasuncom— Charles Bordeleau (@ChiefBordeleau) September 3, 2014
As it turns out, Crosby wasn’t even in Ottawa. According to Darren Dreger of TSN, Crosby is currently training in Colorado.
The story has since been deleted from the Ottawa Sun’s website, which also featured a banner on its web page “Crosby Arrested in Ottawa” according to the Ottawa Citizen.
You can still read the cached version of the report:
Pittsburgh Penguins centre Sidney Crosby was arrested by Ottawa Police late Tuesday while driving a rented Porsche, sources have told QMI Agency.
Reasons of his arrest were unknown, but appear to be driving related.
Sources say Crosby was taken to the Ottawa police headquarters on Elgin street for fingerprinting and a mugshot.
It is unknown at this time why the NHL star was in Ottawa.
Ottawa Police have been unable to be reached for comment.
UPDATE: QMI Agency has since retracted the report, officially.
Earlier today, QMI Agency reported that Pittsburgh Penguins centre Sidney Crosby was arrested by Ottawa Police late Tuesday on driving-related charges.
There was no basis for the story and QMI unreservedly retracts the story in its entirety.
QMI regrets the error.
There might have been a few Philadelphia Flyers fans out there that were hoping upon hope that this report was true. However, even if you were up at 4 a.m., it would have been hard to believe the famously straight-laced Crosby would have put himself in this position. It's not impossible, of course, but with Crosby it would seem highly unlikely.
Crosby has been rehabbing a wrist injury he sustained last season. He is expected to be ready for training camp, where this report is sure to be a running joke among teammates.
