Sidney Crosby named Captain Canada; Toews, Weber alternates
Hockey's best player will captain the gold-medal favorite in Sochi. Sidney Crosby was named captain for Canada on Sunday with Jonathan Toews, Shea Weber the alternates.
Canada has its captain for the 2014 Olympic Games and of course it's the man who scored the golden goal in 2010: Sidney Crosby.
While the Pittsburgh Penguins star and captain seemed like the favorite from the get-go, there was some question as to whether it would be Crosby or Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews. In the end the favorite proved to be the favorite for a reason as Crosby was given the C.
It's a pretty natural choice. Of course there is more to being a captain than just being the best player on the team but Crosby is the face of the sport in the world, the best player there is. The selection was probably not all that hard for Steve Yzerman and crew at Hockey Canada.
Toews, meanwhile, was named an alternate captain by Team Canada along with Predators defenseman Shea Weber. That's one of the great things about international best-of rosters like we see at the Olympics; you can have three captains on your roster. Heck, you can have six (Jamie Benn, Ryan Getzlaf and John Tavares are team captains as well).
In the 2010 Games, the captain for Team Canada was Scott Niedermayer, who was recently inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
