VIDEO: 6-foot-8 John Scott takes run at 5-foot-7 Stephen Gionta
What exactly was John Scott thinking here?
Buffalo Sabres tough guy John Scott is 6-foot-8 and 270 pounds. He gets about four minutes of ice time a night, maybe throws a few hits or punches on occasion. New Jersey Devils forward Stephen Gionta is 5-foot-7 and 185 pounds. He gets about 11 minutes a night, tries to generate some offense and play a solid all-around game. Sunday night, Scott introduced himself to Gionta in a rather impolite way.
Scott, who outweighs Gionta by about a hundred pounds and is more than a foot taller, took a few steps and absolutely drilled the Devils forward against the boards late in the second period. Just one tiny detail Scott seemingly forgot. Gionta didn’t have the puck.
The nearby scrum was fully engaged, and Gionta was looking for the puck to come free. It never did, but that didn’t stop Scott from plowing into the miniature Devil.
The best part had to be Scott complaining to the referee after he was called for roughing. Exactly how would that defense go? Hopefully he was pleading insanity.
Gionta was shown laughing on the bench, just like the rest of us, probably.
In all seriousness, it’s a pretty reckless play from Scott and completely unnecessary. He probably won’t hear from the league about it because it was called properly on the ice, but there’s really no need to be taking runs at unsuspecting players like that.
