VIDEO: Alec Martinez sends Kings to Stanley Cup Final with OT goal
The LA Kings are headed to the Stanley Cup Final after Alec Martinez scored in OT of Game 7 on Sunday to defeat the defending-champion Blackhawks.
People shouldn't get Alec Martinez's name wrong any more.
The Los Angeles Kings defenseman whose first name is not Alex put the Kings into the Stanley Cup Final for the second time in the last three seasons when his shot managed to get by Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford in overtime of Game 7 on Sunday. The goal gave LA a 5-4 win and gave them a date with the Rangers for the Cup.
For as good and entertaining of a series as the Western Conference Finals were between the Kings and Blackhawks, Game 7 was full of goals, just not of the terribly aesthetically pleasing variety. There were a lot of big and/or bad bounces with Martinez's winner being no different.
Martinez flicked the puck on net from the point before it got caught in the traffic in front of Crawford, hitting Blackhawks defenseman Nick Leddy and managing to squeak past Crawford, leading to elation on the Kings bench and deflation everywhere else in United Center.
With the goal, Martinez joins some rather rare company with an OT goal in a Game 7 of a conference finals. The last player to do that was Stephane Matteau back in 1994 for the New York Rangers and it's not like that goal is ever forgotten ...
The goal was the Michigan native's fourth of the playoffs after posting 11 in the regular season. Not bad for a third-pairing defenseman.
