VIDEO: Alex Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin sing in Olympics music video
Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin are among several Russian legends singing in a music video dedicated to Russian hockey and it is wonderful.
Oh, Russia. Thank you for this.
The proud hockey nation is so excited about hosting the Olympics this year, they just had to sing about it. And film it. And put it on YouTube for the world to enjoy.
The song is called "Shaybu, Shaybu" for reasons that will become immediately obvious and a lot of the singing is handled by Russian pop star Irina Allegrova. Prepare yourself accordingly. However, she got a lot of help.
They also got some great Russian legends to chime in including Alexei Yashin, Pavel Bure, Vladislav Tertiak and Boris Mikhailov, who was the captain of the team that lost the Miracle on Ice game (though he seriously was one of the best players in history according to anyone who saw him).
Honestly, I’ll never get the image of the 69-year-old Mikhailov holding a headset to his ear like all recording artists do in studio footage of music videos and just belting it.
The video also includes clips of great Russian triumph in hockey events and keep your eyes peeled for the funny Russia vs. Canada cartoon around the 1:34 mark of the video. Unfortunately, Mike Eruzione is nowhere to be found in this production.
Thankfully, Dmitry Chesnokov of Puck Daddy has the translation of this demonstrably catchy song:
Sometimes there are miracles in this world.
And as if it is a joke,
That the best game for our men
By accident was born in Canada.
To the battle on ice
Everyone had that passion. That ancient passion.
The victory is ours.
Guys, we are with you.
And if it’s really needed, we will score another
Russia is behind you.
Guys, you are the strength!
We are the Russian team,
We are the Red Machine!
We are the Red Machine!
“The best game of our men, by accident was born in Canada” may rewrite the hockey history books. That sounds like some bulletin board material for Mike Babcock’s club. Catchy, hilarious bulletin board material.
There is just too much to love about this video and we can all be thankful it exists. Bring on Sochi. SHAYBU! SHAYBU!
