VIDEO: Blackhawks prank rookie Matt Carey in his NHL debut
The Chicago Blackhawks' veteran players played a little prank on rookie Matt Carey during warmups as the 22-year-old was making his NHL debut.
Just a few short weeks ago, Matt Carey was wrapping up his freshman season at St. Lawrence University. Fast forward to Friday night and the 22-year-old was making his NHL debut for the Chicago Blackhawks after signing with the club as an undrafted free agent.
As you can imagine, Carey was a little bit pumped up. His new teammates were all too eager to capitalize on this emotion. As the Blackhawks were to come out for warmups before their tilt with the Ottawa Senators, the team let Carey go first. Then they let him take a few twirls on the ice before joining him to give him the ol' lonely skate.
The crowd seemed to catch on and even though the Hawks were visitors they gave a few cheers for the newly minted NHLer.
Even if it's a tad embarrassing, that should be a moment Carey will remember for the rest of his life.
Carey saw 7:53 of ice time in his NHL debut. Unfortunately for Carey, he took a costly penalty on a faceoff violation. The Senators scored what stood as the game-winner on the ensuing power play as the Blackhawks fell to Ottawa 5-3.
The good news for Carey, however, is by playing in that one game, he burned the first year off of his newly signed entry-level contract. He'll have one year left before becoming a restricted free agent. Productive little Friday night there.
