VIDEO: Canes goalie Anton Khudobin helped off ice after awkward injury
Hurricanes goaltender Anton Khudobin had to be helped off the ice after falling awkwardly to the ice on Sunday, unable to put pressure on his leg.
It's been a bad week to be a goaltender and lower-body injuries. Following recent injuries to Tim Thomas in Florida and Niklas Backstrom in Minnesota, it was Anton Khudobin's turn on Sunday in Carolina.
With the Hurricanes on the power play about midway through the game, Khudobin came out of his crease to handle a clear by the Coyotes but changed his mind when he saw a teammate chasing the puck down. When he went to return to his net he was stuck in limbo and went down awkwardly. It looked painful.
As soon as the puck was blown dead at the other end of the ice, Khudobin pulled himself and tried to skate off the ice but couldn't. Eventually he was helped back to the bench and taken immediately to the dressing room unable to put any weight on his left leg.
After seeing that, it's no surprise his day was done.
No surprise but Khudobin will not return to game. Lower-body injury.— Chip Alexander (@ice_chip) October 13, 2013
Khudobin might be the backup in Carolina to Cam Ward but he's not your regular backup. Sunday was his third start of the season already, as many as Ward, and Khudobin was the only one to earn a win through the first five games.
Khudobin came to Carolina in free agency after serving as Tuukka Rask's backup in Boston last season. He stopped 47 of 50 shots in the two games he started for the Hurricanes before Sunday. In 14 games for Boston last season he had a .920 save percentage and 2.32 GAA.
