VIDEO: Did Frazer McLaren head-butt Matt Kassian in fight?
In a first-period fight Saturday it appeared Maple Leafs forward Frazer McLaren might have head-butted Senators forward Matt Kassian.
It was no surprise to see Matt Kassian and Frazer McLaren get together for a dance when the Senators and Maple Leafs met Saturday night in Ottawa. The last time the teams met, Kassian engaged in two fights and we know how much the Leafs like to throw down.
However, Kassian might have received a surprise in the fight.
As the two were grappling after an opening onslaught at the hands of Kassian, it appeared McLaren attempted twice to head-butt Kassian. It certainly seemed like that's what Kassian was telling the referees as soon as the fight was finished, motioning to his forehead to indicate a head-butt.
Here's another look at the play in GIF format from SB Nation so you can see the incriminating section over and over again.
The referees conferred but determined there was nothing there and McLaren didn't face any additional penalty.
I've watched it a few times and I can't quite tell if McLaren caught him, or if he even tried. It might have been different had McLaren made solid contact.
You might recall that head-butting is a suspendable offense, although we don't typically see it in fights. Most pugilists won't look too kindly on that. Sabres forward and agitator extraordinaire Patrick Kaleta was suspended four games last year for using his head as a spear.
