VIDEO: Don Cherry talks Ilya Kovalchuk retirement from NHL
Don Cherry finally offered his opinion on the Ilya Kovalchuk situation. It was everything that should have been expected.
Just about the only person whom the hockey world hadn't heard from when it comes to Ilya Kovalchuk's surprising decision to retire from the NHL and the New Jersey Devils at age 30 was Hockey Night in Canada's Don Cherry.
Never shy about his opinions on any matter -- and never trying to hide his dislike for pretty much any hockey player who wasn't born in Ontario -- it was only a matter of time until Cherry sounded off on the Kovalchuk situation.
Thanks to his appearance with Bryan Angus on Next Sports Star, he had that opportunity.
And here it is.
Cherry talked about Kovalchuk's 2012 Stanley Cup Final appearance against the Los Angeles Kings and how he thinks that wore him down (that seems like a stretch) and Russian players in general. On Kovalchuk's potential signing with the KHL, Cherry simply added, "If you don't have any honor, it's a pretty good deal."
