VIDEO: Goalie goal! USHL netminder credited three days later
Green Bay Gamblers goalie Jared Rutledge scored on Saturday in a USHL game, his goal being officially confirmed on Tuesday, giving him a goal and a shutout in the same game.
No matter how they come, goalie goals are always great, even if the credit comes a few days after the fact.
On Saturday in the USHL, the Green Bay Gamblers were up on the Youngstown Phantoms in the closing seconds, 2-0. Naturally Youngstown pulled its goalie for the extra attacker, leaving their net vacant.
Putting the pressure on, Youngstown fired a shot that Green Bay goalie Jared Rutledge easily deflected to the corner and back to the Phantoms. Next came a pass to the point that wasn't stopped until it was in the back of Youngstown's net on the other end of the ice. An own goal that sealed their fate.
Green Bay celebrated the goal that won the game for them as much as anything else. It wasn't until Tuesday that after official review, the USHL gave Rutledge credit for the goal. In other words, he himself outscored the Phantoms on Saturday night.
It had been a while since the USHL had seen a goalie goal.
The last USHL goaltender to get credit for a goal was Jon Gillies of the Indiana Ice during a similar situation on April 14th, 2012. The last USHL goaltender to directly shoot the puck into the net also happened in Green Bay as Ryan Massa of the Fargo Force fired a puck into the empty net during the final moments of Game Two of the Clark Cup Final series on May 1st, 2010.
It's still a goalie goal, no matter how it goes in ... or how long it takes for the credit to come.
