VIDEO: Jonas Gustavsson turns in another save-of-the-year candidate
Jonas Gustavsson made a dazzling glove save just a few weeks back. Saturday night, he added a miraculous stick save to his highlight reel.
Detroit Red Wings goalie Jonas Gustavsson has been having a pretty solid year statistically, including in the highlight-reel save column. He did it again in Saturday night’s preview of the Winter Classic against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In the second period, after giving up a one-timer goal to Dion Phaneuf, Gustavsson came face-to-face with the Maple Leafs captain again. This time Phaneuf had a gaping net to shoot at as Gustavsson was scrambling to get back after making the initial save. Phaneuf put the shot on net, only to get robbed by Gustavsson, who dove across the crease and got the puck with his goalie paddle.
That’s just an incredible save. It was only a few weeks ago that Gustavsson turned in his miraculous behind-the-back glove save, so now he has one with his stick to even things out.
Coming into Saturday’s action, Gustavsson had a 9-3-2 record, .920 save percentage and 2.25 goals-against average.
Hopefully this save gets the 24/7 treatment next week on HBO.
We'll have more video as it becomes available.
