VIDEO: Mike Keenan goes after refs after KHL team loses in OT

Iron Mike Keenan has his team on the brink of the KHL’s Gagarin Cup. A win Monday would have given his Mettalurg Magnitogorsk the league title, but they lost to Lev in overtime to force a Game 7. After the game, Keenan was irate, which is putting it mildly.

Keenan’s rage appeared to be directed at the officials. He appeared to make contact with one referee before shoving a security guard away and berating the three officials still behind Keenan down the tunnel to the dressing room.

Having not seen the game in full, I’m not entirely sure what Keenan was going off about. There were three penalties called all game, none after the second period. Perhaps there weren’t enough called?

After Lev’s Nathan Oystrick scored the OT winner, Keenan was screaming at the officials from the bench. The refs then had to exit through the same tunnel Metallurg did. Then there was the confrontation.

That seemed to be classic Keenan, known for his temper and often cold exterior, there was nothing cold about his exchange, it was all fire.

Keenan’s club remains one win away from claiming the Gagarin Cup. Should Keenan’s club earn the Game 7 win, Keenan would be the first head coach to win both the Stanley Cup (as he did with the New York Rangers in 1994) and the Gagarin. Oddly enough, today, Keenan was given 10/1 odds by Bovada of being named head coach of the Washington Capitals.

It’s unclear if he’ll be back in the NHL anytime soon, but it’s clear Keenan hasn’t lost the passion or at least the aggression.
