VIDEO: Paul Stastny cup-checks Cody McCormick, scores after penalty
Paul Stastny got a minor for slashing Cody McCormick between the legs, but came out of the penalty box and immediately scored a goal. That should teach 'em.
The ongoing trend of NHL players getting giving their opponents a rather unwelcome tap between the legs continued Monday night in Game 6 of the Colorado Avalanche’s series with the Minnesota Wild. This time it was Avalanche forward Paul Stastny with the upwards slash between the legs of the Wild’s Cody McCormick.
Stastny was sent to the box for two minutes for slashing as it was rather obvious and right in front of the referee. He is the third player in about a week to do something like this, with Bruins forward Milan Lucic earning a $5,000 fine for spearing Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser and Stars forward Ryan Garbutt paying a rather weirdly specific $1,474.36 fine for doing the same to Ducks forward Corey Perry.
Here’s a look at the incident via Goon’s World:
So will Mr. Stastny get supplemental discipline? History suggests a fine could be (and probably should be) warranted. He may not mind the fine as much considering he came right out of the penalty box and scored a goal to cut the Avalanche deficit 2-1 on the breakaway.
The Avalanche were in the middle of killing a 5-on-3 when Stastny came flying out of the box catching the Wild defense unaware and scoring shorthanded. That will teach him to slash his opponents in the undercarriage.
If the makers of protective cups needed footage for advertisements, they'll have plenty from these playoffs.
