VIDEO: Rangers' Daniel Carcillo ejected after hitting linesman
Daniel Carcillo received a game misconduct after he made contact with a linesman who was trying to restrain him and take him to the penalty box. He could be looking at a lengthy suspension.
The start to Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final was emotional to say the least. With the Montreal Canadiens playing with the desperation the 2-0 series hole they’re in and the Rangers getting their first taste of home ice this round, things got heated early. Some players got too heated, like Daniel Carcillo of the New York Rangers.
When Carcillo was being restrained by the linesman, Carcillo made the most costly of errors. He shoved linesman away. When that didn’t work, Carcillo gave another shove and actually appeared to hit the linesman in a chin with his elbow. The linesman immediately looked to the referee who saw it all unfolding.

That was an easy call from there. Carcillo was tossed from the game.
This could lead to a fine and serious suspension for the Rangers forward. The rules on physical abuse of officials are quite clear in the NHL rulebook. Depending on the category, Carcillo could be looking at an automatic suspension of 10 games, if it is deemed he deliberately applied physical force to an official.
It appears Carcillo is in violation of Rule 40.3 which reads:
40.3 Automatic Suspension – Category II - Any player who deliberately applies physical force to an official in any manner (excluding actions as set out in Category I), which physical force is applied without intent to injure, or who spits on an official, shall be automatically suspended for not less than ten (10) games.
All game misconducts that are a result of abuse of officials are automatically reviewed. The referees submit a report, suggesting what category the infraction falls under and the league reviews it.
Long story short, Carcillo could be in deep trouble here.
