Roberto Luongo had to start for Vancouver on Wednesday, and it didn't take him long to make a highlight-reel save.
The Vancouver Canucks had to turn to Roberto Luongo for Game 1 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series against the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night because Cory Schneider, the team's regular starter, is still sidelined with what's simply been described as "a body injury."
Being able to turn to a guy like Luongo as your backup is a pretty nice bonus for a team to have, and it's why the Canucks have one of the best goaltending situations of all the teams in the playoffs. Luongo has his share of critics (why, I'm not entirely sure), and his contract isn't exactly a favorable one. But the guy has been one of the best goalies in the league for the past decade. You could do a lot worse than him in your net, and most of the league does every night.
Early in the first period on Wednesday, he showed why he's one of the best with this sprawling save on San Jose's Martin Havlat to keep the game scoreless.
