VIDEO: Ryan Kesler scores gift goal off funky bounce in Philly
Seconds after the Flyers had actually taken a lead, the hockey gods gave it back with a Vancouver dump in taking a bad bounce for an easy Ryan Kesler goal.
Things just aren't going the Flyers' way this season. Now even the boards at home seem to be conspiring against them.
Literally seconds -- 10 seconds to be exact -- after the Flyers had actually scored an even-strength goal and took a rare lead, a dump-in from Vancouver was starting to ring around the boards when Steve Mason went out to play the puck. Only it didn't make it all the way to Mason, hitting something on the boards and ricocheting right to the crease where only Ryan Kesler was sitting. Nothing like an empty-net goal in the first period.
Here's another view of the play in GIF format.
You can look at this as just another exmaple of bad luck in the early part of this season for the Flyers or you can take the karma approach and see it as the hockey gods repaying the Vancouver Canucks quickly for their misfortune this weekend. You'll recall they were the victims of some awful puck luck as they scored a goal on themselves against the Canadiens.
Furthering the karma angle, the Flyers were beneficiaries of some great bounces earlier this season in their one win. Both goals they scored against the Panthers were results of big hops off the end boards going right to Flyers players while Panthers goalie Tim Thomas toiled trying to find the puck.
Things really do have a way of evening out.
