VIDEO: Steve Mason makes fantastic paddle save on Ryan McDonagh
Steve Mason made 27 shots in the first two periods on Friday but none was as good as his save on Ryan McDonagh with his paddle.
Mason might have turned in the save of the first round to bail the Flyers out late in the second period and maintain a 2-1 Philly lead. With play at 4-on-4, the Rangers had a golden scoring chance developing despite Matt Read hooking Ryan McDonagh.
McDonagh came across the front of the crease having beat the defense and had the entire cage exposed. Staring at the back of the net, he shot but a desperate Mason threw his paddle out in a last-ditch effort and managed to keep the puck out.
Not to be lost was that Mason quickly recovered and stopped any chance at a putback Martin St. Louis might have had on the side of the net.
Mason gave up a goal early in the first period but was otherwise outstanding for the Flyers through the first 40, saving 27 of 28 Rangers shots. None was as good at this.
