VIDEO: Steven Stamkos scores long own-goal, then OT winner
Steven Stamkos scored three times Saturday night, but one of those goals was for the wrong team. He redeemed himself with the overtime winner.
Steven Stamkos had the most unusual hat trick you’ll ever see. Mainly because he won’t get credit for it. Yes, Stamkos put three pucks into the net, but only two of those pucks were into the right net.
Stamkos scored once in the first period to tie the game 2-2. The second period went scoreless and then the Lightning star scored the goal that gets him his very own blog post.
With Ben Bishop out of the net in favor of an extra attacker on a delayed penalty call, Stamkos sent a pass to the point. It missed its target, bounced off the boards and all the way into the open net. The goal gave the Sabres a 3-2 lead at that point, much to the delight of the Buffalo faithful.
Cory Conacher got credit for the goal.
Lucky for Stamkos, Ryan Callahan knotted the game just minutes later. That set up overtime.
You had to know Stamkos was going to redeem himself, right? It seems only the stars get the good karma like this.
In typical Stamkos fashion, he blasted a one-timer past Matt Hackett to give the Lightning an important 4-3 win.
What could have been an awfully embarassing night turned out to be a pretty good one for the Lightning captain. You know you're a great goal scorer when you have enough left over to spot the other team one and still win.
