Fans of college hockey will undoubtedly be familiar with the name Shayne Gostisbehere. NHL fans may one day know it as well. The native of Florida is a Philadelphia Flyers draft pick playing for Union College. He is one of the best defensemen in all of college hockey this year and a Hobey Baker finalist.

Though he’s best known for his offensive prowess, the 21-year-old blueliner made one of the best defensive plays of the season Saturday in the NCAA tournament regional final against Providence.

With goaltender Colin Stevens down and out after making a save, Gostisbehere positioned himself in the crease, knocking away one shot from the open net with his hand. The puck came back and he swatted it away again. Gostisbehere then hugged the post like any good goalie would and stopped two more shots.

It was a crazy sequence that ended with no goal for Providence, allowing Union to maintain a 1-0 lead.

Gostisbehere still has a year of eligibility left, but there’s a good chance he could sign his first NHL deal with the Flyers upon the conclusion of Union’s season.

The junior defenseman came into Saturday’s action with 29 points in 39 games and now he has four saves to add to his impressive stat line.
