WATCH: Jeff Petry scores own goal to tie, gets burned on OT winner
Edmonton D Jeff Petry had already had a bad night scoring an own goal, but it got worse.
As a kid growing up in Michigan, maybe Jeff Petry once had visions of suiting up for the Detroit Red Wings one day. Friday night, Petry, the son of former Detroit Tigers pitcher Dan Petry, lived many a young Michigander’s dream. He scored for Detroit. Only problem, as you might be aware, Petry plays for the Edmonton Oilers.
The Oilers were killing an ill-timed Mike Brown penalty and clinging to a 2-1 lead with just under six minutes remaining in regulation when Niklas Kronwall let a shot go from the point. Ladislav Smid made a nice block on the shot, and the puck skittered right to Petry all alone in the slot. Then …
That’s a tough one. Oh, but it gets worse from there.
The Oilers ended up falling 3-2 in overtime on a pretty goal from Pavel Datsyuk (is there any other kind?). The defender whom Datsyuk took inside out for the goal? Jeff Petry.
The beautiful goal from Datsyuk put the sourest of exclamation points on what turned out to be a very ugly night for Petry.
