Christmas came early for Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who scored a ridiculous shorthanded goal in Monday night’s 3-1 win at Los Angeles.

Already up 2-1 at the start of the third, McDonagh simply cleared the puck from the zone but as Kings net-minder Jonathan Quick came to settle it, the puck deflected off his pad into the net.

"I didn't watch it go down [the ice]," McDonagh said. "I didn't know what happened at all. Still trying to get the full story. I was just kind of looking over at our bench, and guys started throwing their sticks up in the air."

Quick’s given up seven goals in the past two games (both losses) and the Kings dropped to 1-2-0 on the early season. It was Quick's first home game since his 10-year, $58 million contract extension this past summer.

Not a great way to get the year started.
