Watch Kris Versteeg try to fight Alex Ovechkin
Florida Panthers forward Kris Versteeg didn't like this hit from Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin. So he tried to fight him. It didn't exactly work out.
In the first period of Tuesday's game between Washington and Florida , Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin finished a big hit along the boards on Kris Versteeg. Versteeg dropped to the ice and remained down for a while before skating off under his own power.
He didn't miss a shift and was back on the ice just a few minutes later and instantly went for some vigilante justice and tried to get Ovechkin to fight him.
"Tried" being the key word, because instead of a fight the two mainly spent some time hugging each other. Versteeg ended up getting the extra penalty and the Capitals scored on the ensuing power play.
Here's a look at the skirmish. If you want to call it that.
And here is a look at the hit from Ovechkin that started the entire altercation.
It appears that Ovechkin hits him into the boards from behind, but it also appears that Versteeg sees him coming the entire time and turns his back to the play, making it worse than it probably would have been.
If you're curious, Ovechkin has three fights in his NHL career according to hockeyfights.com with the last one coming on Dec. 2010 against Brandon Dubinsky of the New York Rangers.
Versteeg has fought four times.
