Ramo defects to Russian league: The St. Petersburg Times reports the agent for Tampe Bay goalie Karri Ramo, Mark Gandler, has confirmed his client has signed a two-year deal to play for Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League (Russia). Gandler added that Ramo, a restricted free agent who was expected to serve as Mike Smith's backup in 2009-10, has been told he will be Omsk's starting goalie. "Of course," Gandler said. "He wouldn't go over there otherwise." Gandler said Ramo's contract has an option which would allow him to opt out after one season. "I don't want to get into the reasons other than to say all of us, including Karri, feel he's better off stepping out for a year and play for Omsk," Gandler said. "Tampa Bay wanted to sign him but we saw it otherwise."

Ramo, who turns 23 on July 1, was 4-10-7 with a 3.66 GAA and .894 save percentage in 24 games last season. He saw a lot of time down the stretch as Smith missed the final months with post-concussion syndrome, but struggled mightily. Smith is on track to return in '09-10 and is reporting he is in good shape, so the writing was on the wall for Ramo. He might be back in 2010-11, but it seems as though you can take Ramo out of your Draft Day 2009 plans.
