Backes converts on delayed penalty: Blues RW David Backes scored a goal and finished at plus-1 during Thursday's game against the Coyotes. Backes opened the scoring at 3:22 of the second while the Blues were awaiting a delayed penalty after B.J. Crombeen was cross-checked into the Coyotes' net. Crombeen scrambled clear of the crease seconds before Backes blasted a shot from the point. It was his first point in five games.

Fantasy Analysis

Backes really came onto the Fantasy scene in 2008-09 with a career-high 31 goals and 54 points. He got off to a slow start last season as well before finding his rhythm in December. However, the circumstances were different. St. Louis was missing a few key players -- Paul Kariya and Andy McDonald -- so Backes had the opportunity to step up. This year, St. Louis is healthy and Backes isn't needed as much. That's not to say that won't change. However, Backes has low-end Fantasy appeal until further notice. He is also flier in leagues that reward heavily for PIM and short-handed stats.

RW David Backes began his career as a right winger, but was switched to center last season. Now he's back on the wing, playing on a line with C Keith Tkachuk and LW Andy McDonald. "I think it's out of necessity," Murray said. "When you look at it, we've lost three wingers. We've lost Alex Steen, we lost T.J. Oshie and we lost D.J. King, so we've lost some wingers. Somebody had to move to the wing and David Backes, we know he can play on the right side." 10/29/2009
