  • Coyotes' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Traded to Arizona

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/23/17) The Blackhawks traded Hjalmarsson to the Coyotes in exchange for Connor Murphy and Laurent Dauphin on Friday.

Chicago's lack of youth was evident when the team was swept by Nashville in the first round of last season's playoffs. The Blackhawks are clearly making injecting youth into their lineup a priority this offseason, and that desire is undoubtedly the driving force behind this trade, as the team is moving the 30-year-old Hjalmarsson in exchange for the 24-year-old Murphy and 22-year-old Dauphin. Hjalmarsson is one of the most underrated blueliners in the league, but his skills as a shut-down defenseman don't necessarily translate into fantasy value. The left-handed Swede will likely skate alongside Oliver Ekman-Larsson on Arizona's top pairing in 2017-18, but he's only tallied 143 points (23 goals, 120 assists) in 623 career NHL games, so he'll continue to be far more valuable to his real-life team as a penalty-killing specialist and shot-blocking monster than fantasy owners next season.

Blackhawks' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Will not compete in Worlds

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/24/17) Hjalmarsson turned down an invitation to suit up for Sweden at the 2017 IIHF World Championship, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Given that Hjalmarsson missed the final three games of the regular season following the birth of a child, it shouldn't be too surprising he declined to play at Worlds. The blueliner was absent from the scoresheet during Chicago's opening-round series -- he failed to register a point and launched just one shot on goal -- but was by no means the only Blackhawks player to come up short against the Preds.

Blackhawks' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Returns to practice

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/11/17) Hjalmarsson (personal) is back with the team following the birth of his child, Eric Lear of Blackhawks TV reports.

As expected, Hjalmarsson will be ready and available for Game 1 against the Predators after sitting out the final three games of the season. The blueliner figures to slot back into the Hawks' second pairing alongside Brian Campbell and should continue seeing around 21 minutes of ice time per contest.

Blackhawks' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Not with team on three-game road trip

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/4/17) Hjalmarsson (personal) isn't travelling with the Blackhawks for their current three-game road trip, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Hjalmarsson remained in Chicago to be with his wife for the birth of their child, which means he could realistically miss the final three games of the regular season. Either way, the Swedish blueliner will be ready to go for Game 1 of the playoffs. With Hjalmarsson unavailable, Michal Rozsival or Michal Kempny will likely draw into the lineup for Tuesday's game against Colorado.

Blackhawks' Niklas Hjalmarsson: Receives night off Friday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/10/17) Hjalmarsson will get the night off Friday when the Blackhawks take on the Red Wings, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Coach Joel Quenneville noted that he wanted to give Hjalmarsson and Johnny Oduya the night off in order to ease them back into action. The pair will almost certainly be available for Sunday's game against the Wild, but in the meantime, Michal Kempny and Michal Rozsival figure to draw into the lineup Friday.
