  • Capitals' Matt Niskanen: Tallies assist Saturday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/17/16) Niskanen picked up a helper in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Flyers.

The Minnesotan accrued the assist while executing a routine clearing play that redirected of Chimera's stick and somehow found its way past Flyers goaltender Steve Mason in the second period. The assist is Niskanen's first point of the playoffs.

Capitals' Matt Niskanen: Finishes 2015-16 with 32 points

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/14/16) Niskanen recorded five goals and 32 points in 82 games during the 2015-16 regular season.

The Minnesotan bested his 2014-15 totals by one assist despite logging a career-high 24:40 in ice time and getting ample opportunities on the top power-play unit with the likes of Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. Entering year three of a seven-year, $40.25 million contract, Niskanen has been a solid and dependable rearguard for the Capitals even if his offensive production isn't quite what the team was hoping for. In the prime years of his career, Niskanen should continue to produce well enough to warrant fantasy consideration in all formats so keep an eye on him in next season's draft.

Capitals' Matt Niskanen: Dishes out two helpers in win

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/28/16) Niskanen dished out a pair of assists in Monday's win over the Blue Jackets.

The defenseman had gone ice cold in the points department, as the points ended a seven game skid off the scoresheet. Even with the drought, Niskanen has now matched the 31 points he posted last season, while also working to a solid plus-13 rating.

Capitals' Matt Niskanen: Yet another game winner Saturday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/5/16) Niskanen scored the game-winning goal in overtime Saturday as the Capitals edged the Bruins 2-1.

He has fired the winner in the Caps' last two wins and now has three points in his last four games. Niskanen is being asked to do more with John Carlson out of commission and he's stepping up. Use him well.

Capitals' Matt Niskanen: Fires home game-winner Wednesday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/3/16) Niskanen sniped the game-winning goal on the power play in Wednesday's 3-2 win over Toronto.

This was just Niskanen's fourth goal of the season and second since way back on Oct. 28. Other than a 47-point outburst in 2013-14 with Pittsburgh where he stepped up in lieu of an oft-injured Kris Letang, the Minnesota native has never been able to crack that top tier of defensemen. Still, with 225 points in 636 NHL contests, Niskanen is a reliable source of depth scoring on the back end that's usually good for 30-35 points and a healthy plus/minus (plus-12 this year, plus-58 in his career).

  • April 9, 2015: Holtby blanks Bruins again, Capitals win 3-0
WASHINGTON (AP) If the Boston Bruins miss the playoffs, they may dwell on their inability to score against Washington Capitals goalie Braden Holtby this season.
March 26, 2015: Capitals coach laments 'poor' play in 3-2 OT win over Devils
WASHINGTON (AP) Even if a win is a win is a win, especially for a team chasing a playoff berth, Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz gave a rather blunt and unflattering assessment of his team's performance in this particular victory.
March 26, 2015: Matt Niskanen's OT goal lifts Capitals past Devils 3-2
WASHINGTON (AP) On a quiet night for Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, the Washington Capitals got rare goals from Matt Niskanen, Karl Alzner and Eric Fehr, along with 29 saves from Braden Holtby, to beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 in overtime Thursday night.
