  • Avalanche's Semyon Varlamov: Out through All-Star break

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/18/17) Varlamov (groin) will be shut down until after the All-Star break, according to Avs coach Jared Bednar.

All-Star weekend will commence Jan. 29, so this news effectively rules out Colorado's starting backstop for at least the next four games. Since Varly continues to be hampered by the groin ailment, it becomes that much more important to give him ample rest and recovery time. Calvin Pickard -- who is coming off a start for which he turned in a .972 save percentage -- will be the de facto No. 1 goalie for the Avs.

Avalanche's Semyon Varlamov: Misses practice with groin flare up

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/18/17) Varlamov was not at practice Wednesday after a recurrence of his groin injury.

It seems Varlamov can't shake this ailment, with his availability against the Ducks on Thursday suddenly up in the air. While the 28-year-old has not been ruled out, it seems more likely than not that Calvin Pickard will get the start versus Anaheim. As of now, Colorado have not brought in a third netminder, so it is possible Varlamov is at least healthy enough to serve as the backup.

Avalanche's Semyon Varlamov: Peppered in Tuesday's home loss

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/18/17) Varlamov stopped just 21 of the 26 shots he faced in Tuesday's 6-4 loss against the Blackhawks.

Varlamov has been absolutely awful this season, and a lack of offensive support wasn't to blame in this one. The goaltender has been a sieve, and he should only be trusted in the deepest of fantasy leagues if you're absolutely desperate. Colorado has won just five times in their past 27 on home ice, and there is very little sign to suggest things will be turning around very soon for the Avalanche and their top netminder.

Avalanche's Semyon Varlamov: In goal against Blackhawks

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/16/17) Varlamov will be between the sticks for Tuesday's meeting with Chicago.

Since returning from a seven-game injury absence, Varlamov has dropped two in a row, allowing a trio of goals in each of those defeats. The netminder will get a chance to right the ship on Tuesday versus a Hawks squad that is 10-9-1 on the road and has just five wins in their last 10 outings.

Avalanche's Semyon Varlamov: Makes 29 saves in tough loss

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/14/17) Varlamov made 29 saves in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Predators. It was his fourth straight loss.

Varly has coughed up his share of hairballs this season, but this one wasn't one of them. He looked surprisingly effective in the blue paint on Saturday; his team just couldn't tickle enough twine to get him the win. Varlamov is now 6-16 on the season.

  • April 12, 2015: Avs' Varlamov Ends Season With 28-Save Win
Varlamov stopped 28 of 30 shots in Saturday's win over the Blackhawks. And that's all she wrote. Varlamov finishes the season strong, winning two straight games and stopping 68 of 72 shots in that span. While the Avalanche may have missed the playoffs, the 26-year-old goalie put together a strong season, posting a 28-20-8 record with a .921 save percentage and 2.56 GAA. His reliability and consistency will make him a strong fantasy option in the cage once again next season.

April 6, 2015: Avs Go With Varlamov On Tuesday
Varlamov is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Preds.Assuming no injuries down the stretch, coach Patrick Roy relayed Monday that the team then plans to turn to Reto Berra on Thursday against the Jets, before Varlamov starts the team's season finale against Chicago on Saturday. Tuesday's foe, the Preds, hold the No. 3 playoff seed in the West, but have lost two straight contests.
