Leighton cleared waivers and was sent down to Rockford of the AHL on Sunday, the Chicago Tribune reports.Leighton, a former Blackhawk, was re-signed during the off-season and was expected to be headed to Rockford. He is a veteran goalie insurance in case either Corey Crawford or Antti Raanta are injured or if Raanta is very ineffective this season.

Leighton was waived by the Blackhawks on Saturday, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports.The 33-year-old Leighton is little more than a depth goalie at this stage of his career, making him no serious threat to claim a roster spot with the Blackhawks. Chicago will go with Antti Raanta as the backup to starter Corey Crawford.

Leighton did not help his cause if he wants to dethrone, Antti Raanta, as the Blackhawks' backup goalie as he saved 17 of 19 shots on goal on Thursday in the 3-2 loss to Detroit.Leighton will need to show more if he wants the backup spot. He is more than likely ticketed to be the starting goalie for Rockford of the AHL. Leighton will probably be in goal on Sunday against Edmonton.
