Kipper pulled from Friday's game: Flames G Miikka Kiprusoff couldn't finish out Friday's game against the Oilers and was replaced by backup Curtis McElhinney in the third period of a 5-1 loss. Kiprusoff was locked in a scoreless battle until Edmonton scored twice in the second period. They opened a 3-0 lead 12:06 into the third and Shawn Horcoff's goal ran Kiprusoff, who finished with 28 saves, from the game. McElhinney then allowed two goals on the five shots he faced. Calgary played the game with only 15 skaters because of a recent series of injuries. "We were missing some key players, which was tough," Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff said. "But it can't be used as an excuse. It was a huge game for us and we didn't play that strong."

Fantasy Analysis

It has been a mystery to what has happened to Calgary and Kiprusoff down the stretch. They had the season on cruise control and then added Olli Jokinen and Jordan Leopold at the trade deadline. Their season then got a little bumpy and Kiprusoff has won just eight of his last 19 appearances. He disappeared when Fantasy owners needed him the most. Too bad. Kipper still has 45 wins and will be among the elite Fantasy goalies off the draft board in 2009-10. The Flames TG will continue to have high-end value as long as Kiprusoff is around.

G Miikka Kiprusoff started 76 regular-season games for the second straight season and has seen action in 300 regular-season contests over the last four seasons. Despite his pleas, he has looked worn-down once the playoffs started in each of the last two years. It's imperative the Flames find a backup goalie they believe in -- and wins enough games -- to cut Kiprusoff's workload enough that he'll be fresh in the postseason. 52//2009
