  • Maple Leafs' Matt Martin: Will play role of protector

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(9/24/16) Martin will play the role of protector, not enforcer, this season with the Leafs, reports the Toronto Sun and the team is being transparent about his role.

"Obviously, they brought me here for a reason," said Martin, who led the NHL with 365 hits last season. "I play the game a certain way for seven years in this league. I'm going to continue to play the game the way I did in New York and be that physical presence. At the same time, it's an opportunity to produce more offensively. In talking to the coaching staff, this is something they want from me." Martin's career high in production was set in 2015-16 with 10 goals and nine assists. His value will come in formats that count muscle stats. And in keeping Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner safe.

Maple Leafs' Matt Martin: Inks deal with Buds

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(7/1/16) Martin signed a four-year contract with Toronto on Friday, TSN's Bob McKenzie reports. The deal comes with an average annual value of $2.5 million.

Martin heads to new territory for the first time since the Islanders drafted him with a fifth-round pick in 2008. He's only produced 88 points (42 goals, 46 assists) in 438 games at the NHL level, but Martin is a punishing winger who will protect Auston Matthews, the first overall selection in this year's draft. He led the league with 365 hits last season, making him a must-own in leagues that heavily weigh that category.

Islanders' Matt Martin: No contract talks as of yet

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/31/16) There have been no contract talks between the Islanders and Martin since the season ended, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

This is a little surprising as Martin is the perennial hit leader in the NHL and part of what may be the best fourth line in hockey along with Cal Clutterbuck and Casey Cizikas. General manager Garth Snow may be waiting to see what kind of offers Martin receives in free agency before deciding if he is worth re-signing.

    Islanders' Matt Martin: Returning Sunday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/10/16) Martin (upper body) will rejoin the lineup for Sunday's game against the Flyers.

After skipping the previous two contests because of the upper-body issue, the bottom-six forward appears finally ready to play. There's a chance that role will shift a bit Sunday with a number of the team's top players sitting out, but that likely won't be revealed until warmups. Still, with just 18 points over 79 games this season, Martin's largest fantasy contributions come in leagues that reward physical categories like hits (365) and penalty minutes (119).

Islanders' Matt Martin: Out of lineup Saturday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/9/16) Martin (upper body) will not suit up against Buffalo on Saturday.

Martin will miss his second game in a row and remains questionable for Sunday's season finale with the Flyers. The 27-year-old is a bottom-six forward for the Isles and it shows in his production, 18 points in 79 outings. The winger's fantasy value is definitely limited, as he does not play on the power play and is averaging just 10:33 in ice time per night.

  • April 11, 2015: Atkinson, Wennberg lift Blue Jackets past Islanders in SO
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) Cam Atkinson and Alexander Wennberg scored in the shootout to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets to a wild 5-4 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday night in the last regular season game at Nassau Coliseum.

April 10, 2015: Isles' Martin Out Friday
Martin (undisclosed) is not with the team. in Pittsburgh and won't play Friday. This is not a surprise as Martin was never expected to play. The Islanders are playing it very close to the vest with their injuries so there is no word on when Martin could return to the lineup. The Islanders clinched a playoff spot Thursday and could choose to play it safe with their injured players to make sure they are healthy for the start of the playoffs.
April 9, 2015: Isles' Martin Unlikely To Play Friday
Martin (undisclosed) is unlikely to play Friday versus the Penguins, according to Newsday.Martin hasn't practiced since suffering the injury and with the Islanders history of playing it safe with their injuries, he may not play until he does practice or unless Saturday becomes a must win to get into the playoffs.
April 7, 2015: Isles' Martin Out Of Lineup Tuesday
Martin will be a healthy scratch for Tuesday's match against the Flyers. The fourth-line tough guy saw just 8:49 of ice time in the Isles' last game Saturday against the Sabres and will now sit out for his second match of the season. It's not expected that he's bound to lose out on a regular role, so those looking for help in the PIM and hit categories could still want to keep Martin active for the final two games of the season.
