  • Hurricanes' Viktor Stalberg: Diminished role on Canes' fourth line

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(12/29/16) Stalberg saw ice time of just 8:14 in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Penguins, his second-lowest TOI of the season.

Stalberg's ice time was as high as 13-15 minutes just a few short weeks ago, however his inability to generate offense has resulted in a significantly diminished role on the Canes' fourth line. He is currently in the midst of a nine-game pointless drought and has just nine points in 33 games this season. As such, his fantasy value is currently restricted to medium and deeper formats only -- feel free to seek out more viable alternatives on your league's waiver wire.

Hurricanes' Viktor Stalberg: Pots two first-period goals in loss

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(11/29/16) Stalberg's two goals in the first period accounted for all of Carolina's offense in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Rangers.

The Blueshirts employed the Swedish winger last year, but let him go over the offseason following his meager 20 points in 75 games. His response was to exact revenge in his return to Madison Square Garden, as Stalberg tied his season high with five shots and picked up his first two-goal game since way back on Dec. 2, 2011 -- a span of nearly five years in which he's played for four NHL franchises. The 30-year-old has been on a heater of late, scoring four times in the last five games after picking up only three points in his first 16. Still, considering his modest ice time, it's hard to expect this to persist.

Hurricanes' Viktor Stalberg: Tallies first goal of November

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(11/22/16) Stalberg scored the game-winning goal shorthanded Tuesday against the Leafs.

He'd gone nine straight without a goal, totaling a mere 11 shots in that span; Stalberg's last goal came back on Oct. 30. But that's what happens when you're stuck in bottom-six minutes, as the journeyman winger has been throughout most of his career.

Hurricanes' Viktor Stalberg: Sets up game winner Tuesday vs. Sharks

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(11/17/16) Stalberg snapped a six-game pointless drought with an assist on the game-winning goal in Tuesday's 1-0 win over the Sharks.

Despite seeing a season-low TOI of just 7:58, Stalberg came off the bench to set up Joakim Nordstrom's clincher midway through the third. While it's nice to see him finally contribute something offensively, Stalberg's rapidly diminishing ice time is cause for concern, and does not help his fantasy value which was already low to begin with. There is no need to be leaning on him outside of very deep leagues.

Hurricanes' Viktor Stalberg: Seeing diminished ice time

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/29/16) Stalberg failed to record a point for the third consecutive game Friday against the Rangers, giving him just a single goal through six games this season. What's worse, he also saw ice time of just 9:40 on the night, his lowest total of the season, playing mainly on the fourth line with Jay McClement and Bryan Bickell.

This certainly continues the downward trend we've seen in Stalberg's career trajectory the past few seasons, ever since he recorded a career-high 43 points with Chicago back in 2011-12. Needless to say, he is a player well worth avoiding in all but the deepest fantasy formats right now.
