  • Rangers' Brandon Pirri: Hanging out in press box

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/27/17) Pirri has been a healthy scratch for eight consecutive games.

Pirri signed on with the Rangers in the offseason and exploded out of the gate with nine points in 13 games -- which is exactly the same number of points that he recorded in his next 44 contests despite significant power-play minutes. As a regular healthy scratch who's no longer young enough to enjoy prospect status, it's hard to imagine Pirri being owned in any fantasy format.

Rangers' Brandon Pirri: Returning to lineup Thursday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/23/17) Pirri will slot back into the Rangers' lineup for Thursday's game against Toronto.

Pirri has been a healthy scratch for New York's last nine games, so he'll hope to contribute on the score sheet Thursday in hopes of making a case for more consistent playing time going forward. The 25-year-old forward only has 16 points in 48 games this season, but is expected to see time on the man advantage as a member of the Rangers' second power-play unit against the Maple Leafs, making him an intriguing option in daily contests.

Rangers' Brandon Pirri: Scratched in six straight

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2/14/17) Pirri sat out of Monday's game against Columbus as a healthy scratch -- his sixth consecutive game watching from the press box.

The Rangers' forward corps is quite healthy right now, and Pirri hasn't played in February as a result. With his massive power-play ice time having resulted in a mere 16 points over his first 48 contests, it's understandable that New York's looking in other directions -- specifically, Oscar Lindberg, who's been doing solid work on the fourth line.

Rangers' Brandon Pirri: Still seeking consistent role

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/13/17) With the Rangers' forward group getting healthier, Pirri needs to prove himself to avoid being a healthy scratch, the New York Daily News reports.

He was looking like an incredible offseason bargain ($1.1 million for one year) when he potted nine points in the first 13 games this year and established himself as a member of the Rangers' power play, but Pirri now has only five points in his last 27 contests. With Rick Nash and Pavel Buchnevich both returning from injuries Friday, he'll need to step up his game, and he knows it. "I think there's certainly some areas to improve," he said. "I think I've got to get back to being a shoot-first type player. I'm here to score goals, and I've been a little snakebitten. Obviously with a couple of bounces here and there it's different, but I can't control that. Just gonna work that much harder and create more shots."

Rangers' Brandon Pirri: Finally busts slump with two-point night

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(12/11/16) Pirri ended his brutal slump with a goal and an assist -- both on the power play -- in Sunday's 5-0 win over New Jersey.

You could see the relief on his face when he banged home a fat rebound in the third period, and Pirri rounded the night out out by assisting on Jimmy Vesey's night-capping tally. Pirri was one of the reasons the Rangers got off to such a strong start to the season, as he provided nine points over their first 13 games. Over the last 16, however, he'd notched one lonely goal to go with a minus-7 rating, including a streak of 12 consecutive scoreless contests that Sunday's game finally ended. Pirri's still getting plenty of opportunities on the power play, but he's barely averaging 10 minutes of ice time at even strength, which cuts into his fantasy upside.
