  • Rangers' Brandon Pirri: Still seeking consistent role

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/13/17) With the Rangers' forward group getting healthier, Pirri needs to prove himself to avoid being a healthy scratch, the New York Daily News reports.

He was looking like an incredible offseason bargain ($1.1 million for one year) when he potted nine points in the first 13 games this year and established himself as a member of the Rangers' power play, but Pirri now has only five points in his last 27 contests. With Rick Nash and Pavel Buchnevich both returning from injuries Friday, he'll need to step up his game, and he knows it. "I think there's certainly some areas to improve," he said. "I think I've got to get back to being a shoot-first type player. I'm here to score goals, and I've been a little snakebitten. Obviously with a couple of bounces here and there it's different, but I can't control that. Just gonna work that much harder and create more shots."

Rangers' Brandon Pirri: Finally busts slump with two-point night

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(12/11/16) Pirri ended his brutal slump with a goal and an assist -- both on the power play -- in Sunday's 5-0 win over New Jersey.

You could see the relief on his face when he banged home a fat rebound in the third period, and Pirri rounded the night out out by assisting on Jimmy Vesey's night-capping tally. Pirri was one of the reasons the Rangers got off to such a strong start to the season, as he provided nine points over their first 13 games. Over the last 16, however, he'd notched one lonely goal to go with a minus-7 rating, including a streak of 12 consecutive scoreless contests that Sunday's game finally ended. Pirri's still getting plenty of opportunities on the power play, but he's barely averaging 10 minutes of ice time at even strength, which cuts into his fantasy upside.

Rangers' Brandon Pirri: Ice cold over last three weeks

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(11/30/16) Pirri has only one point (a power-play goal) and 18 shots in the last 11 games.

He's averaging a slender 13:44 of ice time in that span, but Pirri's continued seeing big minutes on the power play, as he has all year. The fact that the Rangers haven't given up on him is encouraging for his fantasy owners, but it's unclear how much longer they'll stick with Pirri if he keeps failing to capitalize on his man-advantage chances.

Rangers' Brandon Pirri: Continues producing points despite meager minutes

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(11/7/16) Pirri skated only 11:33, but handed out a pair of assists and went plus-3 in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Jets.

The fact that Pirri has nine points and a plus-7 rating in 13 games despite skating only 11:59 on average tells you everything you need to know about how good the Rangers are this year. Yes, he sees a lot of power-play time, which helps, but two-thirds of his points have come at even strength. Even though his relatively low minutes will naturally make Pirri an inconsistent source of fantasy production, it still looks like we're sure to see a career-best campaign out of the 25-year-old.

Rangers' Brandon Pirri: Pots two in win over Bruins

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/27/16) Pirri scored two goals -- one on the power play -- and skated a season-high 13:54 in Wednesday's 5-2 win over Boston.

The Rangers had a golden opportunity in front of them with recent AHL recall Zane McIntyre starting in goal for Boston, and they took advantage, with Pirri at the forefront. His first goal came late on a late-second-period man advantage, and it held up as the game-winner. Pirri's ice time has been slowly rising over the last three games, and his power-play time's been healthy all along. He won't keep up his current pace (six points in seven games) if he can't win his way into more consistent even-strength minutes, but it still looks as though Pirri has finally found a home in New York after bouncing around the league the last few years.

March 26, 2015: Panthers' Pirri Scores Two, Hits 20 Goals
Pirri reached 20 goals for the season Thursday, potting a pair -- one an empty-netter -- on six shots in a 4-1 win over Toronto.Goals, goals and more goals. That's now seven goals in the last seven games for Pirri, and 17 in his last 22. So what if he never gets assists? As long as he's putting the puck in the net nearly every game, fantasy owners won't complain.
