  • Predators' Mattias Ekholm: Value on the rise

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(8/20/16) Ekholm broke out offensively last season, potting eight goals to complement 27 assists over a full 82-game schedule. Still, Nashville's assistant coach Phil Housley expects the blueliner to take another step forward in the 2016-17 campaign.

While it's not clear if Ekholm will join celebrated newcomer P.K. Subban to form the first defensive pair, the smooth-skating Swede is almost assuredly set for a top-four role with a Predators team that averaged the fewest shots against in the NHL last year (27.3 per game). A fourth-round draft choice in 2009, Eklholm earns his keep in fantasy leagues due to his ability to move the puck for scores, plus he's posted shooting percentages of 8.1 and 7.0, respectively, over the last two seasons. Ekholm is in the thick of his prime at the age of 26 and deserves consideration in the vast majority of league formats.

Predators' Mattias Ekholm: Provides two helpers in Game 4 victory

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/6/16) Ekholm notched two assists in Thursday's overtime win against San Jose to even up the series at 2-2.

Ekholm continues his strong play alongside Ryan Ellis, as the pair combined for four assists on a very long night. Ekholm now has at least one point in each of his past four games, and played 41:57 in Game 4, one of four Predators defenseman to do so. Ekholm's emergence this season was a reason why the Predators could afford to trade Seth Jones in exchange for Ryan Johansen.

Predators' Mattias Ekholm: Lights lamp in loss

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/1/16) Ekholm buried a goal in Sunday's Game 2 loss to the Sharks.

Ekholm got Nashville on the board and tied up the score a little past midway through the third period, but San Jose ended up going ahead again for good less than five minutes later. It's been a solid postseason for the defenseman, as he's now found twine three times -- after tallying just eight goals in the regular season -- to go along with an assist.

Predators' Mattias Ekholm: Scores in Game 6 win

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/25/16) Ekholm potted a goal in Monday's Game 6 win over the Ducks.

The defenseman got the scoring started midway through the second period, firing a shot from the top of the circle past Frederik Andersen. Ekholm now has a pair of goals in the series, but he's typically not much of a scoring threat, as his eight goals in the regular season marked a career best.

Predators' Mattias Ekholm: Reaches 30-point mark in win over Oilers

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/15/16) Ekholm assisted on the game-winning goal in Monday's 3-2 win over the Oilers.

While it was James Neal who stole the show for the Preds by supplying all three goals, Ekholm added a helper in the third, allowing him to reach the 30-point plateau for the first time in his career. He's no Shea Weber or Roman Josi, but he's a nice third option on a Nashville team loaded with blue line talent. Feel free to roll him in all medium to deeper fantasy formats.
