  • Hurricanes' Ryan Murphy: Inks two-year deal with Carolina

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(7/14/16) Murphy signed a two-year contract with the Hurricanes on Thursday.

Murphy appeared in 35 games with the Hurricanes last season, tallying 10 assists with a minus-1 rating over that span. The 23-year-old blueliner also spent a large chunk of the 2016-17 campaign in the minors, adding 24 points (seven goals, 17 assists) with a minus-11 rating over 32 games with AHL Charlotte. The 5-foot-11 Ontario native is an offensively-gifted defender who may eventually be tasked with quarterbacking one of the Hurricanes' power-play units, but will need to become more reliable in the defensive zone in order to cement himself as a key cog on the Carolina blue line.

Hurricanes' Ryan Murphy: Records 10 helpers this season

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/13/16) Murphy finished the 2015-16 season with 10 assists and 10 PIM in 35 games for the Hurricanes.

With Carolina out of the playoff mix, the 23-year-old blueliner will finish up the campaign in the AHL with Charlotte, where he has recorded 22 points in 30 games for the Checkers this season. Murphy -- who the Hurricanes took 12th overall in the 2011 NHL entry draft -- has yet to solidify himself as a key cog on the Carolina blue line, but the 5-foot-11, 185-pounder does retain some upside down the road, thanks to his mobility and the offensive potential that he possesses as a future power play option.

Hurricanes' Ryan Murphy: Contributes two helpers in win

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/31/16) Murphy notched a pair of assists, a plus-1 rating and two PIM in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Rangers.

That's an awfully nice way to celebrate your 23rd birthday, now isn't it? Although he continues to come along slowly due to limited minutes, Murphy's at least cracked double-digit points, as he's now up to 10 (all assists) in 31 games this year. That's not much, but Murphy has the draft pedigree and the AHL track record to suggest he's got bigger things ahead of him in the next few years.

Hurricanes' Ryan Murphy: Ready to return Tuesday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/21/16) Coach Bill Peters indicated Monday that Murphy (upper body) will be ready to play Tuesday against the Sabres.

After missing out on Saturday's contest against the Wild because of the issue, it appears a couple days of rest has done the trick. The 22-year-old blueliner doesn't see a ton of ice time (averaging 17:43 this season), but his presence on the power play leaves him in consideration as a cheap daily option. Murphy remains without much utility in season-long formats, however.

Hurricanes' Ryan Murphy: Out of lineup Saturday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/19/16) Murphy (upper body) will not suit up against the Wild on Saturday.

Murphy is still searching for his opening goal of the season, but will have to look for it Tuesday when they face the Sabres. Although he is averaging over two minutes of power-play ice time per night, the 22-year-old has tallied a lone helper with the man advantage, which depresses his fantasy value. The defenseman will be replaced in the lineup by fellow blueliner Trevor Carrick.
