  • Hatcher hangs up skates

(6/16/09) Flyers defenseman Derian Hatcher retired Monday, two weeks after knee replacement surgery in effect ended his 16-year career. The 37-year-old former Flyers captain joined the coaching staff as player development coach. "It sounded like the perfect way to stay in the game and see if I like it," Hatcher said. "I will be watching the younger players and making sure everything runs smoothly for them. I will be involved with running the rookie camp this summer."

    Hatcher return not ruled out

(1/16/09) The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Flyers D Derian Hatcher has a slim chance of returning from a knee injury by playoff time. "It's highly unlikely, but knowing Derian, I wouldn't rule it out, either," said GM Paul Holmgren. Hatcher has been sidelined all season by the knee problem.

Hatcher back skating, but still out

(10/22/08) The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that D Derian Hatcher (knee) has resumed skating but is still a long way from returning to action.

    Hatcher begins season on IR

(9/20/08) The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Flyers defenseman Derian Hatcher (knee) will start the season on injured reserve and not skate during preseason camp. "It's tough. Basically, the doctors are saying that for me to try and play isn't fair to my body and it isn't fair to me," said Hatcher, who has been bothered by knee problems. "They are afraid that I will end up hurting something else, like blowing out my hip or something like that. But we'll see."

    X-rays could determine Hatcher's fate

(8/24/08) The Sports Xchange reports the fate of veteran D Derian Hatcher's career -- and the Flyers' ability to erase his $3.5 million salary against the cap -- likely will boil down to an X-ray of his right knee. Hatcher has made it clear he would like to honor the final year of his four-year contract and play a 17th season in the NHL. The Flyers, who are currently $1 million above the NHL salary cap, have made it equally clear they cannot go through another season with Hatcher in and out of the lineup with knee pain. "If Derian is healthy, he can be a good player for us," general manager Paul Holmgren said. "I'm certainly concerned whether we'll have him or not. There are some serious issues with that knee."
  • May 18, 2008: Penguins thrash Flyers, capture Eastern Conference crown
Ryan Malone, the one Penguins player with firsthand memories of the team's two previous Stanley Cup appearances, scored twice and set up a third goal and Pittsburgh routed rival Philadelphia 6-0 Sunday to win the Eastern Conference championship and a trip to the NHL finals.
May 16, 2008: Strong start in Game 4 enough for Flyers to cling to hopes
The Flyers looked a lot different in their 4-2 Game 4 win than they did in the first three. They finally have some life with the series shifting back to Pittsburgh. But Philly knows it's still facing a difficult task, Wes Goldstein says.
May 14, 2008: Doing some things right still not good enough for Flyers
Despite achieving most of their game plan, the Flyers are one loss away from elimination after a 4-1 setback to the Penguins in Game 3. Wes Goldstein says it's not so much because of Pittsburgh's offense, but it's the under-appreciated defense that is getting the job done.
May 8, 2008: Bad blood will flow from get-go for Penguins-Flyers
Geographic proximity, history, some more recent hostility on both sides -- Wes Goldstein says it adds up to a series that should be nasty from the first minute when the Penguins and Flyers meet in the Eastern Conference finals.
    May 6, 2008: High degree of difficulty doesn't impede Flyers' one-season 180
Philadelphia, the NHL's worst team last season, is four wins from the Stanley Cup Finals -- and even the team owner is surprised. From acquiring Martin Biron to signing Daniel Briere, Wes Goldstein breaks down the Flyers' accelerated rebuilding effort.
