  • Sundin announces retirement

(10/1/09) Former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin is retiring from hockey after nearly two decades in the NHL. "It was a tough decision," Sundin said at a news conference at Stockholm's Grand Hotel on Wednesday. "It's sad to tell you today that my career as a pro hockey player is over." The 38-year-old Swede, who said he reached the decision this fall, played for the Vancouver Canucks last season after spending most of his career with Toronto.

    Sundin unsure about '09-10 status

(7/26/09) The Sports Xchange reports C Mats Sundin still hasn't decided if he's going to play next season, and the Canucks don't even have enough salary cap space left to accommodate the $5.626-million they paid him for half a season in 2008-09. But GM Mike Gillis still isn't ruling out a return by the veteran Swede. "If he wants to play, I'd be happy to have him back," Gillis said. "In the event that happens, we'll have to work out the money the best we can."

    Sundin once again pondering future

(6/18/09) The Sports Xchange reports Mats Sundin came with a lot of fanfare and hype -- not to mention a $5.625-million price tag for just half a season -- when the big Swedish center ended a nine-month hiatus spent pondering retirement and decided to sign with the Canucks in mid-December. He failed to live up to most of it, struggling through the regular season to find both his legs and his hands. He finished with 28 points in 41 games, respectable numbers given the circumstances, but hardly the point-a-game average over 18 NHL seasons in a first-ballot Hall of Fame career.

Sundin has assist in Game 1

(5/1/09) Canucks C Mats Sundin was in the lineup for Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Blackhawks Thursday despite a groin injury that kept him out two games in the first round against St. Louis. Sundin contributed with one assist in 16:34 of ice time, but finished at minus-2.

    Sundin's status remains uncertain

(4/25/09) Canucks center Mats Sundin, who missed the final two games of the first round against St. Louis, was back at practice Friday as the team preps for the Western Conference semifinals. But defensemen Sami Salo, who also missed Game 4 in St. Louis on Tuesday with a lower-body injury, and Willie Mitchell, who was limping noticeably after the series-clinching overtime win, both missed practice. Salo isn't expected back at practice until Monday, but insisted he would be ready for the start of the second round. Sundin, though, didn't sound nearly as certain about his return. "I don't know at this point," said the 38-year-old, refusing to offer any details on his unidentified lower-body injury. "Hopefully I can keep skating and working the way I did today and we'll make a decision as we go on."
