Salary could keep Lukowich in minors: The Sports Xchange reports Canucks D Brad Lukowich was excited to be traded to the team he cheered growing up in British Columbia, but he never got the chance. Lukowich, who was acquired from San Jose late in the summer along with D Christian Ehrhoff, was put on waivers and sent to the American Hockey League despite a steady preseason for a stay-at-home defender with two Stanley Cups on his resume.

Fantasy Analysis

Lukowich, whose $1.8 million salary hurt his chances of making a team pressed up against the NHL's $56.8 million cap, was assigned to Texas, the Dallas Stars' affiliate, rather than to Vancouver's farm team in Manitoba, in part because the Moose have a glut of defensemen and Lukowich had a better chance of playing more with the Stars. It's also because his wife is from Dallas and he played for the Stars before. As for his chances of returning to the NHL, while the Canucks will be happy to have him available for experienced depth down the stretch, his salary means other teams could claim him on recall waivers and Vancouver would still have to pay half his salary -- and have it count against its salary cap this season -- making it more likely the 33-year-old veteran spends the entire season in the minors. Even if back in the NHL, Lukowich has minimal Fantasy appeal. It's safe to ignore him.
