Kubina traded to Atlanta: The Maple Leafs have traded defenseman Pavel Kubina and forward Tim Stapleton to the Thrashers in exchange for defenseman Garnet Exelby and forward Colin Stuart. "We're really excited, but it's a bittersweet day because we're dealing away a popular player and a real favorite of ours in Garnet Exelby, who's been a Thrasher his whole career," Thrashers GM Don Waddell said. "Obviously, Kubina is a player we're very familiar with. He's played in All-Star games and the Olympics. With Kubina here, we now feel we have a legitimate top four on defense with (Ron) Hainsey, Kubina, (Zach) Bogosian and (Tobias) Enstrom. We really felt defense was an area we wanted to upgrade and we believe we did that."

Fantasy Analysis

Landing Kubina is a great haul for the Thrashers, who add a top offensive blue liner. Kubina tied his career-high with 40 points in 2008-09. He had 14 goals (nine power play) but also finished with a minus-15 rating. Toronto was looking to cut some salary, but it was widely rumored that Tomas Kaberle would be the Maple Leafs defenseman on the move. Kubina will bring a great two-way presence to Atlanta and is still worth a look as a No. 2 or No. 3 Fantasy defenseman. He might not have a pretty plus-minus rating, but Kubina will get his fair share of offensive opportunities.
