Theodore benched for Varlamov: Washington G Jose Theodore was benched in favor of Simeon Varlamov in Saturday's Eastern Conference quarterfinal game against the Rangers. Theodore allowed four goals on 21 shots in New York's 4-3 win in Game 1. Varlamov was solid in net, making 23 saves and allowing only one goal.

Washington coach Bruce Boudreau thought it was necessary to put Varlamov in over Theodore, and it almost worked out. His benching doesn't mean he won't be the team's starter next season. He was a No. 2 Fantasy goalie most of the season and will probably retain that status on Draft Day 2009.
