  • D Ossi Vaananan replaced D Sami Salo (lower body) Tuesday in Chicago, and while Vaananen isn't going to make anyone forget Salo's offensive upside (three goals, six points in five playoff games), he was effective, making safe, smart plays in his own end after an ill-advised cross-checking penalty in the opening minutes. It was only Vaananen's fifth game since being claimed off waivers from Philadelphia more than two months ago, and he was right around his eight to nine minutes average against the skilled Blackhawks, well short of the 21-plus minutes Salo logs as the team's best defenseman. "Every time we've had to use Ossi he's played his eight to 10 minutes and played it safe," coach Alain Vigneault said with a laugh. "That's what we want him to do.
