  • Coyotes' Mike Smith: Subpar in loss

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(9:55 am ET) Smith allowed three goals in 27 shots in a 3-1 loss to the Oilers on Monday.

The veteran netminder has now allowed three goals in each of his past four starts and 23 over his last seven, bringing his GAA up to 2.84 to go with a .918 save percentage. Smith is stuck on just eight wins in 26 appearances this year and doesn't figure to get in the win column too often, as the Coyotes are currently the cellar dwellers of the Pacific Division with 32 points and a minus-46 goal differential.

Coyotes' Mike Smith: Expected to start Monday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/16/17) Smith is expected to be in goal Monday against the Oilers.

Smith received the night off Saturday and will open up the Coyotes' three-game road trip in Oil Country on Monday. The veteran's .918 save percentage and 2.83 GAA really aren't that bad considering his subpar 8-11-5 record, but his status as the starting netminder on the Pacific Division's worst team keeps him out of the win column more often than not.

Coyotes' Mike Smith: Secures home win over Jets

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/14/17) Smith saved 34 of 37 shots from the Jets in Friday's 4-3 home win.

The newly minted All-Star was fueled by an offensive barrage that took place in the first frame, holding on for the 'W' despite the Jets dropping two answered goals in the final frame. The victory was Smith's first in close to a month, and he's still working with an ugly 2.83 GAA on the season -- that doesn't scream "All-Star" to us, though he remains the clear-cut No. 1 goalie in Arizona.

Coyotes' Mike Smith: Will start in goal Friday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/13/17) Smith will be in the crease for Friday's game against Winnipeg.

The 34-year-old has been good enough this year to earn a spot in the All Star game, with a .918 save percentage and 2.83 GAA. However, in his last eight games, he has an .885 save percentage and 3.27 GAA, so he's been cold lately. The Jets are 24th in the league in shots per game with 28.8, and 14th in goals per game with 2.73, so Smith has an opportunity to rebound against a middle of the road team.

Coyotes' Mike Smith: Backing up Louis Domingue Saturday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/7/17) Smith will backup Louis Domingue during Saturday's home game with the Islanders, Sarah McLellan of azcentral sports.

Smith has been awful of late, going 0-7-1 with a 3.27 GAA and .885 save percentage over his last eight outings, and will get a mental health day as a result. The Canadian netminder will likely continue to get the lion's share of starts, however, given Louis Domingue's struggles as well. The next opportunity for Smith to guard the blue paint will be Jan. 13 against the Jets and their 14th ranked offense.

  • April 12, 2015: Coyotes' Smith Stops 36 Shots In Season Finale
Smith made 36 save on 38 shots in Saturday's loss to the Ducks.A great final outing for Smith, who finishes the season 14-42-5 with a .904 save percentage and 3.16 GAA. His save percentage improved over the season, but unfortunately with the Coyotes losing so often, Smith wasn't of much fantasy value. With some promising young talent in the Arizona organization, Smith is likely to see his win total increase significantly in the coming years.
