Anderson yanked in loss to Capitals: The Colorado Avalanche saw enough from starting goalie Craig Anderson by the end of the 2nd period on Tuesday against the Washington Capitals. That is because Anderson allowed two goals in the 1st period and three more in the 2nd and the Avs were trailing 5-0 by the time they removed the starter for Peter Budaj. Anderson stopped 16 shots of the 21 shots he faced before Budaj took over. Budaj wasn’t bad the rest of the way but the damage was done as the Capitals won the game 6-1 and Anderson took the loss. Budaj ended up allowing one goal on four shot attempts and making three saves.

Fantasy Analysis

The loss drops Anderson’s record to 16-8-5 on the season. He’s clearly been successful this year but Tuesday’s outing against Washington was a train wreck from the beginning. He had won his previous two starts but gave up five goals in the start prior to those wins. He’s slightly inconsistent of late for the Avs and that limits him to that of a No. 2 Fantasy G. Budaj doesn’t play enough to warrant Fantasy consideration as anything but a stopgap at this time and the Avalanche TG is also a No. 2 Fantasy option.

G Peter Budaj played great while Craig Anderson recovered from a neck injury, but there was never any doubt as to which player was No. 1 on the depth chart. Anderson returned from a four-game layoff Friday night in the Avalanche's 2-1 shootout win over Tampa Bay at the Pepsi Center. 12/12/2009

Budaj stopped 21 shots but lost 1-0 to Minnesota on Wednesday.

Advice

Budaj fell to 3-3-1 this season. He was coming off a shut out of St. Louis and was solid again Wednesday despite suffering the loss. He has a 1.25 goals-against average over his last five starts but could be back on the bench as soon as this weekend with Craig Anderson nearing a return.
