  • Hurricanes' Jay McClement: Ice time dwindles in loss to Blue Jackets

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/22/17) McClement skated just 9:49 in Saturday's loss to the Blue Jackets.

McClement has the misfortune of centering the Hurricanes' seldom-used fourth line, alongside linemates Joakim Nordstrom and Viktor Stalberg. Outside of short-handed ice time, where he leads all Canes forwards with 1:53 per game, there is really not much to like about McClement from a fantasy perspective, since he doesn't rank well in any other peripheral stat category, including shots on goal, blocked shots, hits or PIM. His real-life worth to the Canes far exceeds any value he might have in the fantasy realm. Avoid.

Hurricanes' Jay McClement: Picking up scoring pace in December

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(12/18/16) McClement recorded an assist in Saturday's 2-1 shootout win over the Sabres.

After an excruciating 21-game pointless drought to open the season, McClement now has three points in his last 10 games. Still, it's best to keep your expectations low for the Canes' fourth-line center; after all, he only had 11 points in 77 games last season, and he spends most of his time keeping the puck out of his own net and killing penalties. That rarely adds up to fantasy success in most formats these days.

Hurricanes' Jay McClement: First point of season comes in 22nd game

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(11/29/16) McClement picked up his first point of the year Tuesday, assisting on a first-period goal in a 3-2 loss to the Rangers.

Welcome to the season, Mr. McClement -- the veteran had been held off the scoresheet with only 16 shots on net over 21 games to open the campaign. Of course, the veteran isn't known for his offensive production; he's a fourth-line grinder whose contributions usually don't show up on the scoresheet.

Hurricanes' Jay McClement: Ice time rapidly diminishing

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(11/20/16) McClement, who has yet to record a point this season, saw ice time of just 7:21 Friday against the Canadiens - his second-lowest TOI of the season.

McClement has seen his average ice time steadily decline over the last few seasons, from 15:15 four seasons ago with the Maple Leafs, to just 10:14 currently. His value to the Hurricanes remains tied to his ability to take faceoffs and kill penalties, two stat categories that carry little to no weight in most fantasy formats. As such, he should not be on your roster outside of very deep leagues.

Hurricanes' Jay McClement: Zero points through three games

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/19/16) McClement has zero points and a minus-2 rating in three games this season.

McClement had just 11 points in 77 games last year, so it's no surprise he's off to such a slow start - when your job is centering the team's fourth line, generating offense is not exactly your first priority. The 33-year-old McClement has reached the 20-point plateau just twice in the past six seasons, so fantasy owners should manage their expectations accordingly. His value is confined to very deep formats only.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Cam Ward stood tall in his return from a bout with a virus, and his Carolina Hurricanes teammates gave the goalie plenty of offensive help.
