Ward backbone of 'Canes in '08-09: The Sports Xchange reports goalie Cam Ward was the backbone of the Hurricanes in 2008-09, particularly in the latter half of the season. His steady play allowed the team to make it through the adjustments necessary with a new style implemented after an in-season coaching change. His durability hadn't been in question in the past, but it got to the point when there was no question that Ward would be in the net down the stretch of the regular season. Again, he backed up the organization's commitment to him as the team's goalie of the present and future.

Fantasy Analysis
Ward is coming off a solid season (39-23-5, 2.44 GAA, .916 save percentage, six shutouts) when he re-established his role as the top goalie. And under new coach Paul Maurice, who doesn't shy away from sticking with one goalie, Ward learned what it's like to having the ongoing workload with little to no relief in sight. While Ward is signed through next season, his status and how a projected future salary will fit into the team's plans, is part of the big picture as the Hurricanes move toward this summer's free agency. Ward was really key for Fantasy owners down the stretch in '08-09, winning 13 of his final 17 appearances. His best month was March, when he won 10 of 13 starts and posted a 1.98 GAA. Maurice is back in 2009-10, so Ward is expected to make 60-plus appearances for a fourth straight season -- as long as he is healthy. Consider him a viable No. 1 Fantasy goalie Draft Day.
