Habs hand Cammalleri five-year deal: The Montreal Canadiens are busy again, signing center Michael Cammalleri and defensemen Jaroslav Spacek and Hal Gill on the first day of free-agent shopping in the NHL Wednesday. One day after acquiring star center Scott Gomez from the New York Rangers in a six-player trade, the Canadiens signed Cammaleri to a five-year, $30-million contract. "I couldn't be more excited," Cammalleri said. "To end up in Montreal, I couldn't be happier. When you think of places to play, it doesn't get better than that." Cammalleri has played center and winger, but said he expects to be playing on the left side on a line with Gomez when training camp opens. "I would assume I'll be playing the wing, that's what we talked about," Cammalleri said. "I probably prefer the wing a little bit. I've played both. As of late I feel like I've played a lot more wing than center."

Fantasy Analysis

Gomez might not only be Cammalleri's only new linemate. The Habs also inked longtime New Jersey winger Brian Gionta to a five-year deal Wednesday, and what a line that would be if the trio ended up together. Cammalleri, who was traded from Los Angeles to Calgary in June 2008, was second on the Flames in 2008-09 with 82 points. He led the team with 39 goals. The Canadiens have been very active in the offseason trying to rebuild into a top contender. They have done a great job thus far and adding Cammalleri is huge. He will be a top goal scorer for Montreal and will remain a high-end Fantasy forward Draft Day.

GM Bob Gainey has said that he was looking for a big center but he literally came up short on new acquisition Scott Gomez -- he's 5-foot-11 -- and his projected new linemates. Cammalleri, who is coming off a 39-goal season in Calgary, is 5-foot-9 and Gionta, who had a career season playing on a line with Gomez in New Jersey in 2005-06, is only 5-foot-7. Gainey defended his choices by saying that he meant to say he was looking for an impact center and said the Canadiens' main concern was talent and not size. Cammalleri will make $30 million over five seasons while Gionta will collect $25 million over the same period. With Spacek earned $11.5 million over three seasons and Gill collecting $4.5 million over two, Gainey has committed more than $107 million to the five players over the next five years. 72//2009
