Rangers make offer to Zherdev: The New York Post reports Rangers GM Glen Sather said Saturday that the Rangers have extended $3.25 million qualifying offer to restricted free agent Nikolai Zherdev. "I don't know whether he is going to accept it, though; I can't get an answer from his agent," Sather said of the winger who went scoreless in the final seven games of the regular season and then failed to register a point in the playoffs. "Nik played very well at times, but he has to become more consistent and a little more determined."

Zherdev has threatened to play in Russia if he doesn't get the right deal, but by the Rangers extending an offer they get to keep his rights in the event he does leave the NHL. Zherdev's name has also been mentioned in trade rumors to Ottawa involving Dany Heatley. Although, Ottawa GM Bryan Murray isn't happy with the Rangers' total package, which also involves defenseman Michal Rozsival. Aside from the disappearing act down the stretch, Zherdev totaled 23 goals and 58 points in 82 games with the Rangers. It was his first year with the team after being picked up in a trade from Columbus. Zherdev has been a consistent 20-goal, 30-assist guy the last two seasons. If he does return to the NHL in 2009-10, he will be worth a look as a No. 4 Fantasy forward.

RW Nikolai Zherdev was given a qualifying offer by the Rangers, reportedly for around $3.25 million, keeping him a restricted free agent. The 24-year-old Russian tied for the team lead in scoring in the regular season with 58 points, but was held scoreless in seven games during a first-round playoff loss to Washington. "Whether he's going to accept or negotiate, it's tough to get a straight answer out of his agent," GM Glen Sather said of Zherdev, who reportedly might opt to play next season in Russia. "He's still a young guy who I thought played very well at the beginning of the year and tailed off at the end. ... He's got to become more consistent." 62/9/2009
