Whitney passes on optional surgery: The Sports Xchange reports Ducks defenseman Ryan Whitney, who missed the early portion of the season while with the Pittsburgh Penguins after having undergone foot surgery, had considered having a similar procedure on the other foot, but apparently will not.

Fantasy Analysis

Whitney was very sluggish out of the gate for Pittsburgh, and as soon as he got going, he was then traded to Anaheim. While he logged plenty of PT, Whitney often got lost in the offensive shuffle with players like Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermayer still on the roster. Whitney had a career-low two goals, 23 points and minus-14 mark. Now that he gets a whole offseason to rest, the Ducks hope he will return to his old puck-moving self in 2009-10. The Ducks' blue line could definitely look a lot different next season if Anaheim chooses to trade Pronger and not sign a handful of free agents -- Niedermayer, Francois Beauchemin, James Wisniewski and Bret Hedican. Whitney is a top candidate for a bounce-back season. Consider him a sleeper in Fantasy.
